Facebook status (from a woman): "I love being single because when I get home nobody is expecting me to cook dinner or expecting me to pick up after him." Total confusion in my head. Since when being married means having the obligation to cook for somebody or pick up after the person? Obviously, I had to reply. My friend and I just kind of laughed off my response - because it was not my intention to offend anyone - but then a guy got involved in the conversation and he assumed that I was also single because I think that nobody should be doing those things as an obligation for a man or for the Pope. Obviously, I have much better things to do than explain to the first self-conscious man that crosses my path that I am not having these thoughts from the loneliness of my nights, but because I have a mother who taught me to be independent as long as I can remember.
I will emphasize the difference between WANTING to cook for your partner and HAVING to cook for your partner. For me it is very different because I don't even want to (but come on, I don't even want to cook for myself!) so my brain cannot process this as an obligation. However, it is not the first time I've met a woman who thinks that marriage is equivalent to some kind of servitude. What I do not understand is why you would do it if you perceive it as such. It's been a while since I last mentioned my mom in one of my posts, and I think this is the perfect occasion to thank her for telling me that I should always be able to make a living for myself, that I should never expect anyone to solve my problems and to never tolerate a partner who believes that I should be their servant.
What do you guys think? Does living together mean servitude for one of the parties?
