Cambios - Changes

ENGLISH READERS: I've decided to go back to the beginning and honor my intention to have a bilingual blog. I apologize for the "back and forth", but I've just gone through a terrible loss, and I truly did not feel like putting much effort into this. The video below is in Spanish (sorry about that, but videos will not be bilingual), and I am explaining a few changes. I've decided not to share my looks anymore, because it became such a chore, and I really did not enjoy it. Second, I am adding two new sections. First, I have added a section about my favorite links, where I will share stories that I find in my favorite publications and blogs. Second, I have added a personal section, where I would like to talk about myself a little bit more (i.e. my trips, my professional challenges, etc..). I hope that you'll find this interesting :-)

La ganga del mes (o del año) - Bargain of the month (or of the year!)

 ______________________________________________

One of my rules when buying clothes / shoes is NEVER buy basics in season, unless I really need them. I buy all my basicat the end of the season and now you'll understand why. Yesterday I bought this Nicole Miller shirt for $ 4.97 (now I invite you to follow this link and see how much it was during the season).

What do you think? I love this trend with asymmetric cuts!

Cuestion de Estilo: Look cocktail por menos de $100 - It's a style thing: Cocktail look for less than $100

Total = $96.46

______________________

My best friend called me this afternoon asking for advice about what to wear to a cocktail party next weekend. Condition: the party is rather conservative and she doesn't want to spend much on the look because she probably won't wear it again. Not just that, she doesn't want to spend more than $100 in total. I love this challenge, not only to find the look for under $ 100, but also to find a conservative look cool enough that she'll want to use it again. This is the result. Total = $96.46

Vestido - Dress - Macy's  $29.99

Zapatos - Shoes Mossimo $29.99

Clutch Mimi Boutique $20
Pendientes - Earrings Ebay $7.49

Anillo - Ring Swarovski $8.99

La planta maravillosa - The marvellous plant

_______________________

In various places in our house there are several pieces that belonged to my husband's parents, grandparents and even great-grandparents, as the clock that you can see above - if I remember correctly is about 150 years old. I always think it's something very special to keep part of your family's history, and that's why it will never be another table in our dining room than the one we have now, which belonged to my mother-in-law, an incredible woman that I did not have the honor of meeting. When I clean it or I am sitting at that table, I love to think that her fingers were where mine are now.

_________________________

That piece that you see above also belonged to my husband's family (and complements the dining table that I just told you about) and I love it.

For geographical reasons - it would be very complicated to bring my family's furniture from across the ocean - and also because is not tradition in my family to pass pieces from one generation to the next, I've always been kind of "jealous" of my husband. But in my house there is something very special that belonged to my grandmother, my mother and now me: my wonderful plant. My wonderful plant is a "money plant" that belonged to my grandmother. When my grandmother passed away, my mother kept this plant. When I came to live in the USA, my mother brought a little branch to my house during one of her visits, so I could also have it. I confess that, even though I am completely anti-domestic, I'm very good at gardening, and I think that it has much to do with this plant. It was the first plant that I had and such was my determination to take care of it, that I looked for information on how to feed it, transplanting it, orient it towards the light, and so on. My plant is now huge and I do not think it has anything to do with the amount of money that's going to come to out home, but with the energy that my grandmother left with that plant, which is now with me and protects our home. My grandmother's names was Maravillas (Spanish for "wonders"), and I here's my Wonderful Plant.

Descanso - Break

Today was the last day of class, and I think it was after releasing all the tension that I realized that I was mentally exhausted. That is why I am going to take this week off to rest and get ready for my next accelerated semester which starts on the 31st. Until then, big hugs!

SPIRIT DAY

Feliz Spirit Day!!

Millions of Americans wear purple on Spirit Day as a sign of support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth and to speak out against bullying. Spirit Day was started in 2010 by teenager Brittany McMillan as a response to the young people who had taken their own lives. Observed annually on October 20, individuals, schools, organizations, corporations, media professionals and celebrities wear purple, which symbolizes spirit on the rainbow flag.I wore it last year for the first time and, as you can see in the picture above, I have also worn it this year and will do so because I firmly believe, as Gandhi said,  that we must be the change that we want to see in the world. Happy Spirit Day!

El derecho a casarte - The right to marry

________________________________________________

Yesterday I found a video (that you'll see below) that made me feel angry and sad at the same time. In the video same-sex couples in North Carolina go to request a marriage license (state in which these marriages are not legal) because, mostly, they are legally married in states where the law allows it and they want the state where they live to register their marriage as legal. What happens next is simply amazing. Obviously, people who work there are not to blame because the law does not allow them to give these couples a marriage license. The couples' reactions was so sad to the point of being humiliating and I do not mean their behavior - because I'd probably not display their class and manners if I had to face such injustice. I found it humiliating that there are laws making such couples feel they have to justify their union in front of a stranger. It is legal that Britney Spears (for instance) gets on a plane drunk as a skunk and gets married in Vegas with somebody who is not her partner, but it is illegal for people who have a family and want to legally protect them to do so. This is humiliating. I live in a country where the Constitution says that all people will have the same protections under the law and in this case is completely false. This subject is very near and dear to my heart for many reasons. First, I have friends whom I adore and are gay, and I do not think anyone has the right to establish a law telling them who to love or who to raise a family with. Second, because I live in a country where interracial marriages were illegal until 1967, when the Supreme Court declared that that law violated the constitutional rights of citizens. To think that my parents (and even me if this law was still in place) could have been to marry each other makes me even more certain that these laws are an injustice. To hide behind religion, because that's where marriage is defined as a union between a man and a woman, is again violating citizens' constitutional rights because the Constitution says we have freedom to practice whatever religion we want or not practice it at all. And that's why I think that measures which were drafted under the watchful eye of ardent followers of the Bible have to be reformed once and for all and honor civil rights for which so many brave leaders fought.

Me explico.

This post is inspired by my friend Gloria, because she was the person who made me curious about the new collection that the Kardashian made for Sears (the sisters have managed to make Sears ship the collection worldwide). At first, I would not have paid much attention, because Sears is not famous for its good taste in terms of clothing brands but maybe, just maybe, the Kardashians have put an end to that fame.

Before giving my opinion about the clothes, I confess that I'm a fan of this family. I'll explain why. It is clear that neither sing nor act, or have a special talent that meets the eye. But I admire the ability that the mother - because, in my opinion, she is the creator of it all - to turn the whole family into an international brand after the sex scandal of one of her daughters, Kim Kardashian. That happened in 2007 and four years and several million dollars later, the sisters have fragrances that go out of stock, books that make it into the best seller's list of The New York Times, and a number one reality show. Kris Jenner discovered the formula to turn her family into a business and I think we still have much more to see of this family. Now, here's my review of what I saw yesterday.  I'll start with the bad news.

La tela es malisima casi transparente - Very cheap fabric, almost see through

Este vestido me encanto. Abajo lo podeis ver en una modelo. I loved this dress. You can see it below in a model

Buena tela, buen corte. Good fabric, good cut.

Probablemente mi favorito. Muy buena tela y corte super favorecedor. Probably my favorite. Very nice fabric and super flattering cut.

Now let's talk prices. The pieces range from $ 40 to $ 100. The collection being at Sears has a great advantage. This type of stores have sales almost all year, that is, if you go day and the item is at full price, just return in a week and it will be at least 30% off (that was the case yesterday) . So the dresses were about $60. I did not pay much attention to the prices for the tops or pants because nothing caught my attention. But I am sure that one of those dresses will make it to my closet :-) What do you all think?

I love to read the digital newspaper The Huffington Post because I always find very interesting articles. Today I found the following article 20 steps to genuine happiness and I loved it. Here are some of the steps that I consider the most important:

1. Self-Acceptance - There's no happiness if you're not OK with who you are. Accepting yourself as you are now is the best motivation for you to work harder at having a better life.

2. Kindness - When you open your heart to the needs and feelings of others, it simultaneously fills your heart. When you can give freely and let go of greedy consumerism, the happier and more fulfilled you'll be.

3. Freedom - Happiness goes hand-in-hand with letting go of whatever or whoever isn't helpful to you or causes you pain. When you're attached to hurtful people, false beliefs, obsessive thinking or compulsive behaviors, happiness will never arrive.

4. Self-trust - It's impossible to be really happy when you feel unsafe, anxious or insecure. Trusting yourself to deal effectively with life's challenges will give you the inner sense of security you need in order to be happy.

5. Love and Connection - The quality of your connections with others is responsible for much of your happiness, as healthy attachments create a fulfilling and reassuring sense of belonging. Happiness can come from any form of love, be it romantic, familial or platonic, but the one form you can't live without is self-love.

What steps do you take towards your happiness?

Como vestir como una celebrity sin arruinarte - How to dress like a celebrity without breaking the bank

Today in It's a Style Thing, I bring you one of my best secrets: how to look fabulous at a wedding without breaking the bank. I don't know about you, but I do not like wearing the same dress to several weddings. This means that I used to buy dresses for weddings that never saw the light of day again. Until I discovered Rent the Runway (you will need to subscribe to gain access to it, but you only need to give your email address). On this page, you can rent designer dresses at prices even lower than it would cost you that dress that you will probably wear only once. What is the advantage? Well, you will go to the event dressed in Donna Karan, Dolce & Gabbana, Vera Wang and others. Here I leave my favorite dresses (some of them I've tried already).

MI FAVORITO - MY FAVE
